Chinese: The "Bird of Joy"; good fortune. A chattering magpie signifies good news, the arrival of guests. Under the Manchu dynasty it also represented imperial rule.
Over the last couple of days, we have had about six Magpie flying around our yard. I love the idea that the Chinese have – that Magpie is a bird of joy and good fortune! It seems like our yard is more alive. Our garden is growing quickly, and the crop of tomatoes coming in makes me think we will have lots of spaghetti sauce and salsa mix.
As I was looking through some old paintings, I saw an interesting one that features a magpie as the sole being alive in the picture. This means that Magpie has occupied people’s thoughts for a long time.
As Magpie is sitting on the gate, one thinks that it is waiting for company. My Ancestors believed that in the winter, the Magpie would wait for the devas or elementals or goddesses/gods to visit the farm, and bless the animals that would give birth in the spring. The new calves, lambs and foals were indeed welcome guests on a farm.

Watch for Magpie in your life and then let me know if it is announcing that you are going to have good fortune or that company is coming. Sometimes, the two are the same thing!
