Angels Speak - A Definition of Friend

image

The Angels speak about friendship and how all of us need to have some good friends.  In a discussion about friendship, a question came up.  “How do you know someone is a friend?”

The various answers are:

  • A friend is someone that you go out to do things with and to have fun with
  • A friend is someone like you who has the same spirit and values
  • A friend is one who brings peace to you when you are with them
  • A friend is someone who will do things for you, or be in service with you as you do things
  • A friend is someone that you share with out of love and trust.

Tarot – Osho Card on Laziness

  image

9 of Water: Laziness
This gentleman clearly thinks he's got it made. He sits in his big over-stuffed chair, wearing his sunglasses, shaded by his umbrella, with his pink slippers and his piña colada in his hand. He doesn't have the energy to get up and do anything because he thinks he's done it already. He hasn't yet turned to see the mirror cracking around him on his right, a sure sign that the place he thinks he's finally arrived at is about to shatter and dissolve before his very eyes.
The message this card brings is that this poolside resort is not your final destination. The journey isn't over yet, as that white bird flying into the vastness of the sky is trying to show. Your complacency might have arisen from a real sense of achievement, but now it's time to move on. No matter how fuzzy the slippers, how tasty the piña colada, there are skies upon skies still waiting to be explored.

   -from the OSHO ZEN TAROT deck

I was meditating and pulled this card for my focus for the meditation.  The card caused a flood of thoughts.  Some of the thoughts were quite funny! I am sharing only some of the thoughts.  (Chuckle)

  • People that work hard and become successful have to work hard to stay successful.  They cannot stop forever.
  • A week at the beach is my limit, then I need to do something.
  • Achieving brings about the need to achieve.
  • No one ever is completely safe.
  • If you are going to be lazy, the beach is a good place to go.
  • Success is a blessing.  Do not abuse it.
  • Change is a good rest.
  • A career is impossible if one is lazy.
  • The beach is a place of peace if you are by yourself.
  • We all want to have fun.

You can add your own comments to the list.

Angels Speak - A Dr. Seuss Moment

image

The great gift of Dr. Seuss is the practical advice that he hands out to people in the form of fun and funny ways of grouping words together.  The practical advice – you CHOOSE your path – never ages.  To repeat, it is timeless.  We need to make ourselves conscious of our choices.

Spirit Speaks - Your Connection With Others

image

I have been reviewing my life as I watch my 22 year old nephew live his life.  I find what he does so fascinating.  We are different and the same.  We are related by blood.

I watch the fun that he has with his friends.  Some of those friends he met when he was thirteen, and playing hockey.  Some of his friends were on opposing teams.  His group of friends keep peace with each other, guide each other, enjoy the spirit of life with each other, and genuinely express gratitude for the great things they get to do.  The six of them just did a junket to Vegas.  They did tours and went to shows and explored. They grew their bond.  He has friends that have stayed for a while and dropped off.  But these are his core.

I am lucky that I have several friends that have been with me since I was 19.  And I am several decades older now.  We still laugh and carry on, when we can get together as we are several provinces apart.  These friends are my foundation.  They have been my guides and they have helped me find peace with different situations.  They were the training ground for the rules of friendship and have given me the grace to go out and make more friends – some that stay and some that do not.

It makes me realize that we are not just I or me; we are our friends too.  And that, I think, is a great treasure!

Angels Speak - On Being Happy

image

I keep thinking about how a baby comes into the world with nothing, and how happy a baby is.  As it gets older, and people give it “things”, it becomes unhappy when it doesn’t have “things”.  It does make you wonder what our lives would be like if manufacturing just stopped, and if we did not have things.

Concentrate on some questions and see what happens as the answers come out.

  • What made you laugh today?
  • What action happened that gave you a warm, fuzzy feeling?
  • What caused you intense frustration today?

Blessings.

Spirit Animal - Little Buffalo

image

Little Buffalo Calf jumps in today, to tell us that life is about enjoyment!  If you cannot have fun and feel the happiness of being in what you are doing, it is time to change up your life.  All Beings are given the love of life and the joy of celebrating feeling good.  Even the oldest animals will kick up their heels when they feel life move through them.

Blessings.

Spirit Animal - Elephant Singing

Animals bring joy and happiness with them.  They live in the now moment and yet, like humans, can have long memories of grievances and of great kindnesses.

I dreamt of a young Elephant, who was standing out in a field, singing.  He was singing of the joys of the tribe (family).  He was singing about eating tasty grasses and leaves.  He sang too, about the young animals he would get to play with from time to time.  He sang about his mother, and how she cared for him.

He made me think that we humans should be so lucky.

Blessings,

Judy

Spirit Animal – Tiger Affection

clip_image001

What is affection?  The word is a noun meaning “a gentle feeling of fondness or liking”. In some definitions, it is a form of love.  So, can Tiger, who is a solitary animal, have affection for another Tiger?  The answer seems to be, “Yes”.  And, it can happen to male and male or female and female.  They are friends.

Perhaps the message here is that we all need to show affection to others – gently of course – for affection builds confidence in one’s self and in the other person.  It is win-win.

Blessings,

Judy

Spirit Speaks - Be Happy

image

I was wondering how I was going to be able to find a way to tell a friend that I did not want to see her any more because she was so unhappy that she was making it difficult to be around her.  Most if not all of her friends had abandoned her.  I had not given up – yet.  I was close.

I finally said that I would not be calling her any more.  She asked why, and I said it was because she was not happy – not once in a year and a bit had she been happy.  She told me that she did not know how to be happy and that it was my job, as her friend, to teach her.

My response was, “You cannot teach happiness.  It is something that you choose.  When I choose to be happy, my day is glorious.  If I choose not to be happy, then everything that happens has a down side, and whatever happens pulls me down too.”

She looked at me, and walked away.

Blessings,

Judy

Spirit Animal - How Otter Saved The Animals

One of my young friends loves otters!  She identifies with their swimming, their playfulness, and their resourcefulness.

She wanted to know an old story of the otters.  The following Cree legend is for her.

*****

image

As the story is told, in the days when the earth was new and there were no men but only animals, the sun was far away in the sky. It was so far away that there was no summer. It was so far away that the trees and the grasses did not grow as they should.
He-Who-Made-the-Animals saw how it was that there was not enough sun to heat the earth, and so he fashioned a snare. The Sun did not see the snare in his path, walked into the snare, and the snare held him fast.

Then the sun was close to the earth. In fact, the snare held the sun so close to the earth that there was no night. Day after day the sun shown and the earth dried and the grasses withered. There was not enough food or water for the animals and they desperately called a council.

"Sun," the animals said, "You give too much heat to the earth."

"Set me free from this snare" the Sun said, "and I will go away."

"But if you go away, then there will not be enough heat."

"Set me free," the Sun said, "and I will come to the edge of the earth in the morning and in the evening; then at noon-time I will stand straight above the earth and warm it then."

The animals sat around the council fire and they said, "Who is going to set the sun free?"

"I shall not do it," Wildcat said. "Whoever sets the sun free must go so close to the sun that he will be burned to death."

Lynx said, "Whoever sets the sun free must chew the leather thong that holds him; the sun will burn him to death before he can do it."

"I shall not do it," said the deer, the wolf and the raccoon.

"I shall do it," Otter said. "How can you do it?" said the animals. "You are too small, your teeth are for fish, and your fur has already burned away." None of the other animals liked the otter because he played too much. They did not think he was brave.

"Let him try," Bear said. "He will burn to death, but we will not miss him. He is of no use to us. He looks silly now that his fur is gone." The animals laughed.

Ignoring the taunts, the otter set off to the place in the sky above the earth where the sun was held by the snare. Otter took many days to get to the sun. The sun burned him. The sun was so bright, Otter had to close his eyes. When he reached the sun, Otter began to chew on the leather thong that held the sun. His skin was burning and blistering, his eyes were hot stones. But Otter did not stop chewing.

Suddenly he chewed through the leather. The animals saw the sun rise into the sky. The animals felt the cool winds begin to blow on the earth. Otter had freed the sun from the snare.
Time passed. Otter lay in the center of the council ring. There was no fur at all left on his body. His skin was burned and scorched and his flesh was falling off his bones. His teeth were only blackened stumps.

He-Who-Made-the-Animals also stood in the center of the council ring. "Otter," he said, "the animals will not forget what you have done for them. I will see that they do not forget," and he gave Otter new strong teeth, tireless muscles, keen eyesight, and a powerful tail to help him in his hunting and in his play. He did not have to give him bravery. But he gave him new fine fur that was like down on his skin, and a second coat of fur to guard the first so that he would not get cold in water or in winter. Then he gave him joy so that he would always be happy in his otter's life, and Otter has so remained until this day.

Spirit Animal - Shining Rabbit

image

According to the Chinese calendar, this year, 2011, is the “Year of the Rabbit”.  Several times over the last two weeks, a big white rabbit has been out in the cul-de-sac, sitting in the snow, and watching everyone.

Most days, she seems to sit where the sun is shining, and the frost in her fur makes her shine, and makes her look ethereal, or “not real”.  The dogs see her, and whine, but seem happy not to chase her.

One day, as she sat, seeming to stare right at me, I asked her if she had something to share with me or with others.  Here is what she said.

“ I am here to speak to you of quiet times – when the grass was tall and green and lush.  With very little effort, all beings had enough to eat.  The sun was gentle and warm, and the time of snows was one for sleeping and being lazy and dreaming good dreams.  These times were the times before men.  These were the times when all beings were in harmony and balance.  Animals did not destroy their habitat or other animals recklessly.  Something only died when food was required.

Humans are now at a point where they need to learn to how to be moderate and quiet.  Man will now feel Nature move across the Earth in rebellion of all the unkindness that has been done.  Nature will be no longer peaceful; it will be full of anger and to clear this anger, the Earth must erupt.  Many will not be able to live with these changes.  I say, “Have faith!”

Open up to the fun and to the healing that is in the Earth and all around you.  Walk with the animals, the birds, and the trees.  Swim with the fishes.  Be cleansed.”

Spirit Speaks - Brotherhood

image

My two words for the day are “brotherhood” and “healing”.  My first thought was, “Wow, that is a far-out combination!”  Then I realized that the only way to heal is to incorporate the concept of “brotherhood” into our lives.   Brotherhood means “the belief that all people should act with warmth and equality toward one another, regardless of differences in race, creed, nationality, etc.”.  This definition comes from dictionary.reference.com.

Brotherhood is hard for most of us to incorporate into our lives because we believe that most people have one of these attributes: they should listen to us, but don’t; they aren’t as smart as us; they are worthless; they are lazy; they are losers; they are control freaks; and, they are too much trouble.  That is quite a list of judgements that we have about people.

I realize that my big task is to look at my life and who I work with, and accept them as is, in brotherhood, so that I can speed up any self healing that I have left to do.  As well, I need to work with the people that Creator puts in my path so that I can see what lessons I need to learn.  Learning brings a great peace to our lives.  This makes me think about a slide that a friend sent me.  Here it is.  I wonder if it is also saying that we have a chance to clear Karma with that person.

image

I will continue to mull over this idea of Brotherhood and healing, and work to walk this talk.

From Judy – Happy Valentine’s Day–Feb 14, 2011

image

This is the day that we have set aside for expressing love.  This is also the day that is said, in legend, to be the God, Cupid’s, busiest day.

“In Roman mythology, Cupid (Latin cupido, meaning "desire") is the god of desire, affection and erotic love. He is the son of goddess Venus and god Mars.”  - from Wikipedia

Cupid tries to match people together so that men and women will not have to roam the Earth alone, and so that each has a witness to the life journey that they are on.

I wish each of you a very Happy Valentine’s Day!

I wish that each of you is already connected to your one, true love, or that your one true love is around the corner.

I wish you each days of love and laughter.

Tarot Discussion–What will 2011 Bring For All Of Us?

From the Shaman Deck by Lo Scarabeo.

image

The Wheel of Fortune
In the Moon position
Home matters.

image

The Wheel of Fortune appears it foretells a major change in circumstance, often brought on by forces outside ourselves. In the midst of all the ups and downs, remember that the Wheel has a still center. This same calm can be found at the core of your own being. To know that place, to embrace the present and accept each moment as it comes.

Six of Cups
In the Mercury position
Business matters and skills.

image

Leave the worries of the world behind. Live fully in the present. Even a few moments of such deep ease can seep into and change your life. If you are not experiencing the joy promised in the Six of Cups, you might look to your memories for such a time. In fact, this is traditionally the card of nostalgia, looking back on happier days. But more than just longing for a perfect and irretrievable time, reminiscing can help you draw insight from the past to enrich the present. Forgotten dreams may resurface with renewed potential.

Eight of Swords
In the Venus position
Love and relationships.

image

The Eight of Swords speaks to a time of paralyzing indecision. You may feel so caught between choices that you are unable to move forward or back. Although external forces may be blocking your way, the inability to act is primarily rooted in your mind. Fear is your captor; self-criticism and self-doubt are the ties that bind you. And there may be other emotional undercurrents at work that you haven’t been willing to confront. Despite feeling overwhelmed, it’s time to shrug off your victim status and invest yourself in the outcome of your situation. Watch out for the voice that says, “I just can’t do it, I give up.” Trust yourself and start putting one foot before the other on the path to freedom.

The Chariot
In the Sun position
Fame and achievements.

image

The Chariot challenges you to balance your outer and inner realities and maintain equilibrium, even at top speed. You will need focus and concentration, for you might have to make decisions on the spur of the moment. It may take all your resources of strength and will but, if you can keep a steady course, the Chariot will surely carry you to victory.

Seer of Cups
In the Mars position
Adversity and opposition.

image

The Seer of Cups encourages you to spend time alone journaling, dreaming, or exploring nature. She may describe an introspective person in your life, and almost certainly points to qualities worth nurturing within yourself right now.

Ace of Wands
In the Jupiter position
Gain and expansion.

image

The Ace of Wands, like all the aces, holds magnificent potential. This card presents the best qualities of the suit of fire: strength, power, inspiration, passion, and transformation. This upsurge of creativity marks an auspicious time to begin new projects and take on new challenges.

Angels Speak–Thoughts About Family

image

As we draw close to Christmas Day, most of us are now having to deal with family and friends who are family, and we are feeling the pressure to “do things just right”; “to have things perfect”; “to meet others expectations”; and, “to perform”.

The Angels have given me some thoughts around this.  Funnily enough, they come from others who have to deal with family, too.

May your time with your family be healing and healthy, and provide you with the love and the guidance that carries you through your days with a song in your heart!

Family quarrels have a total bitterness unmatched by others. Yet it sometimes happens that they also have a kind of tang, a pleasantness beneath the unpleasantness, based on the tacit understanding that this is not for keeps; that any limb you climb out on will still be there later for you to climb back.
-- Mignon McLaughlin

Feelings of worth can flourish only in an atmosphere where individual differences are appreciated, mistakes are tolerated, communication is open, and rules are flexible -- the kind of atmosphere that is found in a nurturing family.
-- Virginia Satir

I know why families were created with all their imperfections. They humanize you. They are made to make you forget yourself occasionally, so that the beautiful balance of life is not destroyed.
-- Anais Nin

Family life is full of major and minor crises -- the ups and downs of health, success and failure in career, marriage, and divorce -- and all kinds of characters. It is tied to places and events and histories. With all of these felt details, life etches itself into memory and personality. It's difficult to imagine anything more nourishing to the soul.
-- Thomas Moore

Spirit Animal–Otter On Fear

image

Otter has a happy view of life.  Wikipedia says, “Otters are playful animals and appear to engage in various behaviors for sheer enjoyment. Different species vary in their social structure, with some being largely solitary, while others live in groups – in a few species these groups may be fairly large.”

Otter tells us that she knows what it is like to have fear.  She and her family are hunted by humans, big cats, eagles, and sometimes wolves, and coyotes.  Being hunted has conditioned Otter to keeping a close eye on the landscape and to looking over her shoulder to see what might be watching or sneaking up on her.  Each den has an escape route, and often, that escape route takes her right into the river where she can out swim most predators.

However, Otter does not hide away.  Instead, she explores her territory and knows where she can hide if need be.  She is wily and quick.  Even in the coldest of times, she plays because playing helps her forget to be fearful.

If Otter is your guide, then some of the questions that you might answer are:

  1. What is your biggest fear?
  2. What happens to you if this fear does manifest?
  3. Is this the worst that can happen?
  4. Have you tried to create the situation so that you can deal with the fear for once and forever?
  5. What do you do to protect against it?
  6. Otters do not worry.  Do you worry about your fear most of the time?

Spirit Animal – Hummingbird Buzzes Around

The following comment appeared on the Hummingbird blog for October 8, 2008.  The story and the reply may also have relevance for many of you.  Therefore, I am sharing it as a post since many people do not read all the comments. – JH

                                                       ~~~~~~~~~~~~
image  Picture of hummingbird from www.wildbirdsupplies.com
Judy, please tell me what you think about my frequent hummingbird visitor. One morning I was leaving my apartment building, I heard a loud buzzing noise & saw something move real fast across my path. I thought it was a bee so I batted away. To my surprise, it was humming bird flying, yet still right in front of me, looking at me. The hummingbird began to fly off but for only a few feet and then backed up or flew back and just hovered in front of me again. A week later, at the park with my kids I saw another hummingbird hovering up high in a tree. Another week or two went by, again outside my apartment I experienced another hummingbird with bright red feathers on it's back. Just yesterday, another hummingbird has blessed me with its presence. This bird was brown and green. What could possible be the message from all of these birds since they were all difference.
Reply:
Hi and thanks for sending in the fascinating information on hummingbird.
The knowing that I have around this is that Hummingbird is your spirit animal guide and is trying to get a message to you. Please understand that the messages will resonate with you if they fit, and they will not resonate if this is not your experience.
The different birds are used because it seems that you have not been paying attention to the messages in the actions and the environment that the bird is in.
The messages are:
1. Life is sweet! Now is the time to enjoy the differences in all things that you do, and to let go of the judgement around the "how" or the "why" they are different.
2. Hummingbird has great courage and is not afraid to make changes or to travel great distances even when it is not sure exactly where it is going, or what will be waiting. Hummingbird tells you to make the changes that you have been procrastinating on doing because you are afraid to change. Each change is like a flower that goes from bitter to sweet as it blossoms.
3. Hummingbird would like you to spend more time outside. The trees and flowers are healing. Whatever is going on with you, you do need healing. Let the birds and the flowers and the trees help.
4. Life is full of differences. It is the differences that make us unique and give us our special gifts. Hummingbird says that it is time to allow yourself the freedom to be yourself, unique and beautiful, able to stand free and above the constant criticism that others may make of you. It is your journey, not their journey. They have no say.
Ancestors Speak – June 1 2010
June is the time of hot sun, growing, and enjoying.  Our Ancestors scheduled several celebrations that lead up to Summer Solstice, generally celebrated on June 20, 21, or 22, depending on where you are in the world.
One of the celebrations, held June 1st or 2nd, was a gratitude celebration that honoured the Goddess of Growing Things, and the Sun God for helping things grow.  The day and night was filled with fun, thanks, and love.  In fact, many couples married on this day.  And, now couples marry all through the month of June.
Nature gets in the act because so many birds lay their eggs, and even hatch them during June because this gives the young a chance to grow to maturity before fall, and the cold, set in.  If the bird is migratory, then the young have time to prepare for the flight.
This year, the Ancestors urge us to be more prepared for the fall and for the cold.  They say that the summer will be short, and that the cold will come early. In Calgary, we still have cold, although we have not had snow since the weekend.  Perhaps it is time to stock up on staple goods, flashlights and batteries, or even candles and matches.  Set aside a store of water.  Being prepared is not just a Boy Scout motto.
                             ************
This picture of Maligne Lake was taken by Judy Hirst in August 2009.  At this point, the summer is almost over in the high Rockies.  Snow has started to fall.
