Last night, I was teaching a “Healing Tools” workshop and the topic that side tracked us for a while is “Who decides what is in our highest good?” The discussion was that it is our Spirit/Soul that decides what is in our best and highest good. Given that the word “good” derives from the Old English word “gōd”, which perhaps meant “God”, it makes sense to me that our Spirit or God Self decides for us.
Our intellect and ego will usually try to keep us safe. Interesting to me is the fact that our ego will sometimes push us to an addictive substance – food, alcohol, drugs, piercing – in order to relieve pain, and from the ego’s point of view, keep the person safe.
To me, addictions are not in the highest good because they are an over indulgence, or, in Buddhist terms, out-of-balance behaviours. Therefore, those types of behaviours need to be released. Pain of any sort that debilitates is out of balance, and needs to be released.
We all have bad experiences and experience pain and suffering. However, when the lesson is learned from the situation, then the situation is no longer required, and the situation may be released for the highest good.
What is the lesson? Well, the underlying lesson in all experiences is “It is not about the other person, it is about you!” Each lesson requires us to see ourselves and the part we play in each situation that causes us pain of some sort. After all, we are each in charge of our own movie about this life. We each create what we see and feel and do. Therefore, it becomes a choice to release that which no longer serves us. Go ahead! Make the choice. It feels great!
