A Change In Sleeping Patterns In The Last Several Months

                                                           Picture from unsplash.com

A strange thing is happening in North America to our adult sleep cycle.  Many, many people are saying that they are having two sleeps a night or one short sleep one night with a long sleep the next night, repeatedly. In the last three weeks, I have talked to family and friends and acquaintances that are all puzzling about why their sleep pattern is changing.

Our Ancestors went to sleep pretty much when the sun went down.  After sleeping for about four hours, they would wake up, have some water and something to eat and do something creative like reading/studying, writing, drawing, thinking, carving, baking, dancing, sewing, knitting, mending things, tending to animals, praying/being spiritual, and even watching the sky.  Then, they headed off to bed and slept until dawn or just past dawn, averaging about eight hours a night.

This form of sleeping helped the Ancestors process food as they ate later and helped them have time to digest both the meal and the events of the day and plan for the next day. This sleep pattern helped them to be more alert, active, and spiritual.  Sleeping like this may have kept them healthier.

Compare the Ancestor’s sleep to the sleep many in North America have.  People eat late, drink late, work late, and sleep little.  In the past, I have heard so many folks describe sleep as a waste of time.  Lots of successful people talk about how little sleep they need.

The question then is - “Why is our sleep pattern suddenly changing?”  I think that there are multiple reasons that the sleep patterns are changing for many of us.

  • The isolation that most of went through the last two years because of the pandemic has caused us to rest more and I think that most of us are now caught up on sleep. As we merge back into a more mainstream style of working, our body/mind does not want to lose the creativity that we acquired during the pandemic so our brain creates a space for us to be creative.
  • There is a rising awareness of the Earth and our connection to it - a view fostered by great advocates like National Geographic and wise and dedicated environmentalists like Jane Goodall.  Being awake for several hours during the night helps us feel the connection to the Earth because it is so quiet.
  • The time that we are awake at night and processing and asking “why” is allowing us to connect and understand ideas bigger than ourselves.  We are actually becoming more spiritual (not religious).
I am sure that there are many other reasons.  Share them if you have some insight.  Meanwhile….

Many Blessings.

Spirit Animal - Swans Speak

It seems that every Monday, when I walk my dog with my friends, we see a flock of twelve swans fly over us.  First, that the swans stay here in the winter is remarkable.  Second, the energy of their flight washes over us and even the dogs get excited.

What is the message that these beautiful birds are bringing to us? The most important message is that you need to acknowledge the true beauty of self and to awaken that inner power of self.  Other aspects are:

  • Honour your emotions and the emotions of others
  • Honour the ancient and the rituals
  • Look to new adventures and new spirituality
  • Look at the swan as a totem for the mystic and the dreamer

Happy Valentine’s Day 2022!

Poster from a collection of images from timesnownews.com

Valentine’s Day!  The day that we are encouraged, especially commercially, to express our feelings of love to our family, friends, and special someone.

My wish for you this Valentine’s Day is to find time to live life and find love where ever you can.  I wish that you find time to be kind, to be filled with loving kindness, and express love/compassion for someone who needs a show of kindness.  May your spirit be loving every day!

Many Blessings.

Ancestors Speak - The Power of Persistence

Picture from J Hirst -taken of Elbow Falls in August 2021

Our Ancestors have some powerful parables about taking action.  Parables are stories that become sayings overtime.  One of the sayings is that expending big energy is like a torrent of water bursting down a mountain.  It has power for a very short period of time.  When energy is managed, it has sustaining power just like the constant gentle wash of water down a mountain side. The gentle wash eventually will wear down the mountain.

In life, we will do tasks with short but large bursts of energy that play us out and may even stop us from doing much for a day or two.  If we use our energy wisely and manage our energy, we are like the gentle wash of water that will have staying power and help us to whittle our way through many tasks.

Many Blessings.

Angels Speak - Keep Your Inner Peace!

I was in a situation yesterday where I was getting so upset with a family in a grocery store.  Normally, the grocery store is a soothing place with quiet music and staff that sometimes break into song. The family - Mom, Dad, and two kids about six and eight - were very loud and argued about everything.  Both parents were obviously not in a happy frame of mind and both parents were being very vocal and demeaning to their children.

I was about to say something, if only for my peace, when my inner guidance - my angels speaking - reminded me to stay calm and peaceful and to project the calmness and the peacefulness to the family.  I took several deep breaths in and closed my eyes and strove to find the peacefulness I normally carry around with me.  I breathed it in and out.  I projected the peacefulness to all those around me.  I focused on walking in a sunny meadow.  I concentrated on my walk in the store.

Suddenly, I realized that it was much quieter in the store.  Perhaps the family left.  However, when I rounded into the next aisle, there was the family.  They were much quieter and looked more pleasant. Whatever calmed them was a welcome relief.

I realized then, how quickly a strongly negative influence like the unhappy family, could throw those around them into a more negative space.  Rotten apples in a barrel effect, it seemed.  I also realized that we all have to work at overpowering the negative with a positive influence.

Perhaps you will have the chance today to send peace and tranquility to someone who is unhappy.

Many blessings.

Why Gratitude?

If you are a participant in many of the spiritual conferences and podcasts that are currently available online, you will notice that all of them mention the power of gratitude.  For the record, www.vocabulary.com has a great definition of gratitude.

Gratitude means thanks and appreciation. ... Gratitude, which rhymes with "attitude," comes from the Latin word gratus, which means "thankful, pleasing." When you feel gratitude, you're pleased by what someone did for you and also pleased by the results. Unlike indebtedness, you're not anxious about having to pay it back.
Knowing how to feel grateful and how to practice gratitude is a gift from Great Spirit.  Buddhists say that in order to feel compassion, one must know how to feel gratitude and to express gratitude.

One of my teachers explained to me that gratitude is a special wave of energy that spirals to the heart of the Universe.  The Universe feels the joyful news and grace within the gratitude.  This wave of energy is like a magic wand that waves abundance to the one that expresses gratitude.

May you have a ton of gratefulness today!

Many Blessings.

Feb 1 2022 - The Beginning of Season’s Change

After a long span of winter with cold temperatures and lots of snow, all of us in the North look to February to signal a change in the weather.  The first really warm rays of sun hit us and we feel better for the sun on our face.

February is a time of Peacefulness when we know that the worst of the weather is most often behind us and we start looking at our seed catalogues for ideas for the garden and for the flower beds.

It is a time where it is easy to close your eyes and sink into peaceful meditation as you contemplate the beauty of Nature.  An easy mantra to use is:

Nature surrounds me and protects me.

            Nature heals me.

Nature supports me to be me!

Hiraeth - Longing For a Place Forgotten

Longing…longing for the place that used to be, that we recognize at a soul level.  At the soul level, there are not any boundaries of time and place.  There is only the sacred recognition of a space where you used to belong.

Have you ever experienced Hiraeth?

More about Hiraeth in a future post.

Many Blessings.

Are YOU Listening to Nature?

A while ago, one of my friends sent me the amazing quote below.  She knew that I was working on mindfulness and on being more attuned to Nature and the signs and messages that Nature provides.

Enjoy the wonderful ideas in this quote from Angus Williams.

      *************

Drink water from the spring where horses drink. The horse will never drink bad water. Lay your bed where the cat sleeps. Eat the fruit that has been touched by a worm. Boldly pick the mushroom on which the insects sit. Plant the tree where the mole digs. Build your house where the snake coils to warm itself. Dig your fountain where the birds hide from heat. Go to sleep and wake up at the same time with the birds – you will reap all of the days golden grains. Eat more green – you will have strong legs and a resistant heart, like the beings of the forest. Swim often and you will feel on earth like the fish in water. Look at the sky as often as possible and your thoughts will become light and clear. Be quiet a lot, speak little – and silence will come in your heart, and your spirit will be calm and full of peace.

Nature is talking to you, are you listening?

Hearing The Sound of Your Name

When I was in my teens, I started to hear my name when I was out walking in the woods or riding my horse in the pasture, checking on our herd of cattle.  Since then, I will hear my name, not in my head, but in the air around me when I am out in Nature, or when I am very quiet and focused on a project. Sometimes, I hear it at night, and it wakes me up.

Many people have told me that they sometimes hear someone/something calling their name when everything is quiet.  They are curious about why they hear the sound of their name.  The first reason that one hears the sound of their name is that the person has the gift of clairaudience  and therefore can hear sounds that many people will not hear.  Secondly, when a person hears their name, it is the Universe alerting the person to something important that will happen in the next while.

Others have different explanations for hearing one’s name.  For me, hearing my name lets me know that something important will either be asked of me or will be an action around me, within the next 24 hours.

Many blessings!

On Patience

The Ancestors tell us that to accomplish what they have accomplished takes great patience.  Simple tools and difficult environments meant that to build a house or a barn or a fence took a great deal of time.

Our Ancestors laugh at us because they see that we want everything instantly.  We, the descendants, do not know patience.  Patience brings positivity.  Patience brings change slowly.  Patience gives us the courage to say hard things.

Today, slow down.  Practice patience.

Many Blessings.

On Being Fear-Less

                                              Picture from Casefoundation.org

The hardest part of growing up, I think, is adjusting to how many things one must/should be afraid of.  When we are very young, we are fearless.  Our parents and siblings teach us about fear and that we should fear what we do not know.

The Google Dictionary says that fear is:

an unpleasant emotion caused by the belief that someone or something is dangerous, likely to cause pain, or a threat.
"he is prey to irrational fears"

To move through life, we need to be in harmony with our surroundings and we need to be fear-less.  First, we do need fear.  It helps us in dangerous situations.  Second, we have way too much fear in our lives and we need to reduce it.

We learn to fear being outside, the future, fast vehicles, slow vehicles, anything or anybody that is different, to name a few of the fears.  And we have not talked about fear of different insects and snakes.  We even fear things that we only imagine might happen.

How do we become fear-less?  We work on being confident and on healing our fears.  We work on the source of the fear and even the karmic situations from past lives that have created the fear in this lifetime.  We work and we progress.

Many blessings!

Leave It Behind

                                                            Picture from quotefancy.com

When I work with clients, I find that many people are stuck in a past event or set of events, that they cannot let go of.  These folks are always looking behind them so that they have trouble moving forward.  This means that they miss so many opportunities that they end up spinning their wheels and feeling frustrated and resentful of life.

Life is set up to give us all experiences… experiences that are fun, that are challenging, that rock our world, that cause us grief and sorrow, and that move us forward.  If someone stays stuck in the past, they develop an anger that gets directed outwards to everyone around them, even though the anger is towards them-self.

When life happens, we need to be mindful that nothing lasts forever, that each moment is a teaching moment for us, and that we need to let go of imagined hurts, push through the pain of injuries, and look forward to the next thing which is usually an offset to what just happened.  Remember, the Universe always works in balance.  A negative is balanced with a positive.  However, you must be aware to see it happen!

Many blessings.

Yoga Poses To Release Anxiety

                                         Picture from Paleohacks…..

Several months ago, a friend sent me the poster/picture above that shows a series of yoga poses that may be used to relieve anxiety.  Each pose uses the wall to achieve balance and to make the moves easier.

I have worked through the routines several times and I have shared them with several friends and asked them to try the routines for at least five days.  The question is, “Do these moves actually relieve anxiety?”

While none of us could identify a real anxiety in our lives, we all noticed that this routine simply made us feel better!  Try this routine and see what you thing of the moves.

Blessings!

Lean on Me

Picture from Soundscapesourcing.com

Through the Christmas holidays, I practiced the idea of “lean on me” in two different ways.  In the first way, I was the leaning person.  I mentioned in an earlier post that I pinched a nerve in my back which impeded everything that I was doing.  I had to lean on people for help.

In the second way, I was the person being leaned on.  A friend was going through some nasty stuff and phoned me for support.  As she had been exposed to COVID, I could not go and comfort her so we spent several long phone calls with her talking and with me listening.  Mostly all you need to do is listen.

Whether you are the leaner or the person being leaned on, there are some truths about expectations:

  • The leaner is looking for some understanding, some love, and some kindness.  In general, the person looks for support.
  • The person being leaned on does not need to solve the problem.  They just need to be mindful that the person is hurting in some way and that person needs love and kindness.

Many blessings!

Just a Little Prayer

                                                               Image is from PrayerBowls….

The times that you feel at your worst and your lowest energy is a great time to say a little prayer. When you are happy and on top of the world, it is a great time to say a little prayer.  In other words, anytime is a good time for a little prayer.

A little prayer means that.  Short. Small. Little.  Address the entity that you pray to, make an ask if that is what you need.  Give thanks and end.  Or simply do a little prayer of thanks.  Gratitude goes a long way to keeping your energy levels up.

Many blessings!

Let It Be

Have you ever noticed that some people, and many of them are family, see a situation and figure that only they can solve the situation, even though it does not concern them at all?  These people poke and prod and say things that inflame the participants until folks are not speaking to each other.

Some people call this the “busy body” syndrome.  Another name for those that interfere are “meddlers”. You probably know other words that describe this trait of interfering.  Perhaps you are one of those that sees something going on and you are determined to fix it.

When you look at the quote above, muddy water describes many situations in our lives.  The Natural Earth remedy is to let muddy water settle so that the mud drifts to the bottom of the pail and the clear, pure water is on the top.  When meddlers stir the pot, the situation/water stays muddy and seems to become muddier.  It is especially aggravating when they stir the pot without your permission.  For a Shaman, interfering with others or forcing your will on another, is a type of sorcery.  The First Rule of the Universe is “Do no harm!”.  Forcing your will on another or interfering with others without their permission is sorcery, and eventually leads to wrong intent.

The hardest part about seeing struggles in others is being mindful that each struggle a person receives is a lesson.
  • When you interfere without permission, you muddy the lesson.
  • That means that the person must learn the lesson over and over.
  • When the lesson is not learned, then healing does not happen.
  • Muddying the waters interferes with healing.
If you want to change your behaviour, let the behaviour of others alone, unless you are asked to interfere.  Be conscious that in cases of abuse or bullying, some jurisdictions legislate that you must interfere for the greater good.

Many blessings.

Spirit Animal - The Call of the Dove

                                        Mourning Doves from the birdsCalgary.ca

Through this very cold weather that started about a month ago, I am making sure to keep the bird feeders filled and I am sprinkling seed on the ground for those birds and animals that do not access the feeder.  The most regular attendees for the seeds on the ground are the Mourning Doves. Currently, we only have two at our seed bank.  In late summer and fall, the Dove pairs brought their hatchlings to feed so we sometimes had as many as 15 Doves on the ground.  We love watching them!  There is always a “look out” Dove allowing the others to feed in peace.  If a threat is spotted, for example, a hawk, Look Out Dove signals the rest and they scatter into the evergreens for shelter.

The sound of the Dove, the soft cooing, represents different things depending on the cadence of the call.  For some folks, the sound of the Dove during bereavement means that the deceased is signalling that they are well into the next phase.  Sometimes the sound is more of a soft hooting cooing… signalling that all is well and peaceful.  This is the sound heard mostly in the evening. The call can be clipped and urgent which is calling the clan of Doves together.

The lessons from Dove and its calling sound are:

  • The tribe/family is very important.
  • Having a look out or someone to watch your back is important as danger can come from many places.
  • Sitting with your family to chat about the day and about life is a bonding.
  • Compassion and support for people suffering loss helps all of us.

You can read about other messages from Dove in the following blogs:

Nature Supports Us

Picture of the flowers in our sidewalk flower bed.

We hear lots of thoughts about Nature supporting us and how we need to get out in Nature to help our healing — healing of the body, mind, and spirit.  What I found though, through the last several weeks, is that getting outside is a chore, and walking any distance was a challenge.

Knowing that I needed support from Nature, I started looking at all the pictures of our yard and our trees and our garden.  I started with the most recent and then back over the years.  Our first garden at this house was in 2004. As I looked at the pictures of our gardens and hikes and ramblings, I would feel a healing sensation wash over me.  The pictures were helping me.

Perhaps we can get a lift of energy from pictures of flowers and streams and mountains and trees.  What do you think?

Blessings.

Support - From All Sides

My work background is in accounting and technology. Over the years, I have come to understand that support is usually supporting users of software or computers.  I have completed many hours of software support.  Recently, I learned a different aspect of support, and I was on the receiving end.

Around the middle of December,  I pinched a nerve in my back.  Because it did not seem too serious at the time, and I was preparing for family meals and putting together last minute Christmas items, I pushed through the discomfort.  On December 20, I could hardly get out of bed to go the bathroom.  I got prescriptions for muscle relaxants and pain killers.  I had to learn to move more slowly and thoughtfully - in other words, I had to learn to be mindful about my movements.  I had to learn to give very clear communication to those around me that were helping me to move in those first few days, and to have clarity about what movements I needed to do and how I was going to do them.

The healing road back to easier movement and less pain has been very slow.  Laying with heating pads and infrared lasers and ice packs gave me lots of time for reflection on what happened and how I was getting through it.  The one word that describes my Christmas is “support” with Love.

As I sort through the memories of the last few weeks, I am grateful for the love and support of my husband, my sister, my dog, my neighbours, and my extended family.  Things that needed doing just got done around me and for me.  Meals seemed to happen. Cleaning got done.  Many thanks to my husband and my sister who came and stayed for several days.  I slept a lot!  I would wake up and my dog was cuddled beside me, waiting for me to be mobile.  One day, when I was in a very deep sleep, he stuck his nose in my face and licked me.  As I woke up, I noticed he was whining and seemed quite concerned.  I am so grateful to them!

I am still recovering and mobile.  I still am taking it easy.  I thank all my Angels that helped me through the last several weeks.

I hope that your Christmas and New Year were filled with love and joy and peacefulness and fun.

Blessings.
