Gratitude, the simple and profound feeling of being thankful, is the foundation of all generosity. I am generous when I believe that right now, right here, in this form and this place, I am myself being given what I need. Generosity requires that we relinquish something, and this is impossible if we are not glad for what we have. Otherwise the giving hand closes into a fist and won’t let go. - Sallie Jiko Tisdale, “As If There is Nothing to Lose"
It seems simple – being grateful. Sometimes, though, it is hard to be grateful for difficult circumstances. How can you be grateful when someone is yelling at you and blaming you for every misfortune in their life? How can you be grateful when someone you have trusted lets you down because they only have their own interest at heart? How can you be grateful when all your dreams come crashing down because of the actions of another?
These are the big questions that travel with us all of our lives. What we learn is that each lesson brings us wisdom and strength. Those are traits that we can easily be grateful for. Most often, we are only grateful after something has “proven” itself.
We can be grateful that we are well, alive, and productive each day.
