This is my friend, Gradin, in the picture. Roger and I were sitting on the side of the big rock outcropping that is known as “Kachina Woman”, and who is in the picture below.
Gradin is a tree spirit who lives in a juniper tree on the edge of Boynton Canyon outside of Sedona. One minute it seemed the tree was whole, and the next minute that the bark split, and this feisty little guy pops out and begins to take part in our conversation.
We had been meditating, and then sat and simply looked out across the desert at all the quiet, stark beauty that was there. As Roger and I chatted, I could hear this muttering and what sounded like cursing, although I could not see anyone.
And then I heard, “Over here! You! Over here! Look at me!”
That’s when I met Gradin.
He has the highest respect for the indigenous peoples that have honoured Kachina Woman over the centuries.
He is sad because the Parks Services are no longer using the ancestor’s names for many of the spiritual places, and therefore many tourists coming here do not know about the power and history of the different sacred sites.
On the other side of Kachina Woman is a powerful vortex area. We met a couple who had walked up and climbed some, so that they could have a picnic lunch in the vortex on his 65th birthday. Because he had some health problems, he also took all of his medications and supplements so they could sit in the vortex for an hour or so, and pick up the wonderful energy.
Gradin likes that type of celebration. He even threw in his own blessing!
