Spirit Animals – Dog is my best friend

Roger and I have two dogs, Magic and Sage, and two fish. Right now, we also have two Abyssinian cats living with us who are our guests until Christmas.

This is a picture of me, with our dogs, taken last fall by our friend, Caroline.

Sage and Magic are the two reasons that we get lots of exercise, that we have many reasons to laugh, and they are the best example of unconditional love that I know of.

Knowing my passion for animals, my friends send me animal stories all the time.  Here is one about a black lab that I would like to share.  I do not know if it is true.  It is, however, a great read and aptly illustrates the intelligence of dogs.

********************************************************

They told me the big black Lab's name was Reggie as I looked at him lying in his pen.  the shelter was clean, no-kill, and the people really friendly. I'd only been in the area for six months, but everywhere  I went in the small college town, people were welcoming and  open.  Everyone waves when you pass them on the street.

But something was still missing as I attempted to settle in to my new life here, and I thought a dog couldn't hurt.  Give me someone to talk to. And I had just seen Reggie's advertisement on the local news.  The shelter said they had received numerous calls right after, but they said the people who had come down to see him just didn't look like "Lab people," whatever that meant.  They must've thought I did.

But at first, I thought the shelter had misjudged me  in giving me Reggie and his things, which consisted of a dog pad, bag of toys almost all of which were brand new tennis  balls, his dishes, and a sealed letter from his previous owner..  See, Reggie and I didn't really hit it off when we got home.  We struggled for two weeks (which is how long the shelter told me to give him to adjust to his new home).  Maybe it was the fact that I was trying to adjust, too.  Maybe we were too much alike.

For some reason, his stuff (except for the tennis balls - he wouldn't go anywhere without two stuffed in his mouth) got tossed in with all of my other unpacked boxes.  I guess I didn't really think he'd need all his old stuff, that I'd get him new things once he settled in.  but it became pretty clear pretty soon  that he wasn't going to.

I tried the normal commands the shelter told me he knew, ones like "sit" and "stay" and "come" and "heel," and he'd follow them - when he felt like it.  He never really seemed to listen when I called his name - sure, he'd look in my direction after the fourth of fifth time I said it, but then he'd just go back to doing whatever.  When I'd ask again, you could almost see him sigh and then grudgingly obey.

This just wasn't going to work.  He chewed a couple shoes and some unpacked boxes.  I was a little  too stern with him and he resented it, I could tell. The friction got so bad that I couldn't wait for the two weeks to be up, and when it was, I was in full-on search mode for my cell phone amid all of my unpacked stuff.  I remembered leaving it on the stack of boxes for the guest room, but I also mumbled, rather cynically, that the "damn dog probably hid it on me."

Finally I found it, but before I could punch up the shelter's number, I also found his pad and other toys from the shelter..  I tossed the pad in Reggie's direction and he snuffed it and wagged, some of the most enthusiasm I'd seen since bringing him home.  But then I called, "Hey, Reggie, you like that?  Come here and I'll give you a treat."  Instead, he sort of glanced in my direction - maybe "glared" is more accurate - and then gave a discontented sigh and flopped down.  With his back to me.

Well, that's not going to do it either, I thought.  And I punched the shelter phone number. But I hung up when I saw the sealed envelope.  I had completely forgotten about that, too.  "Okay, Reggie,"  I said out loud, "let's see if your previous owner has any advice.".... .....

____________ _________ _________ _________

To Whoever Gets My Dog:

Well, I can't say that I'm happy you're reading this, a letter I told the shelter could only be opened by Reggie's new owner... I'm not even happy writing it.  If you're reading this, it means I just got back from my last car ride with my Lab after dropping him off at the shelter.  He knew something was different.  I have packed up his pad and toys before and set them by the back door before a trip,  but this time... it's like he knew something was wrong.  And something is wrong... which is why I have to go to try to make it right.

So let me tell you about my Lab in the hopes that it will help you bond with him and he with you. First, he loves tennis balls.  the more the merrier..  Sometimes I think he's part squirrel, the way he hordes them.  He usually always has two in his mouth, and he tries to get a third in there.  Hasn't done it yet.  Doesn't matter where you throw them, he'll bound after it, so be careful - really don't do it by any roads.  I made that mistake once, and it almost cost him dearly.

Next, commands.  Maybe the shelter staff already told you, but I'll go over them again:  Reggie knows the obvious ones - "sit," "stay," "come," "heel."  He knows hand signals:  "back" to turn around and go back when you put your hand straight up; and "over" if you put your hand out right or left.  "Shake" for shaking water off, and "paw" for a high-five.  He does "down" when he feels like lying down - I bet you could work on that with him some more.  He knows "ball" and "food" and "bone" and "treat" like nobody's business.

I trained Reggie with small food treats.  Nothing opens his ears like little pieces of hot dog. Feeding schedule:  twice a day, once about seven in the morning, and again at six in the evening.  Regular store-bought stuff; the shelter has the brand. He's up on his shots. Call the clinic on 9th Street and update his info with yours; they'll make sure to send you reminders for when he's due.  Be forewarned:  Reggie hates the vet.  Good luck getting him in the car - I don't know how he knows when it's time to go to the vet, but he knows.

Finally, give him some time.  I've never been married, so it's only been Reggie and me for his whole life.  He's gone everywhere with me, so please include him on your daily car rides if you can.  He sits well in the backseat, and he doesn't bark or complain.  He just loves to be around people, and me most especially. Which means that this transition is going to be hard, with him going to live with someone new.

And that's why I need to share one more bit of info with you..... His name's not Reggie.  I don't know what made me do it, but when I dropped him off at the shelter, I told them his name was Reggie.  He's a smart dog, he'll get used to it and will respond to it, of that I have no doubt.  but I just couldn't bear to give them his real name.  For me to do that, it seemed so final, that handing him over to the shelter was as good as me admitting that I'd never see him again.  And if I end up coming back, getting him, and tearing up this letter, it means everything's fine.  But if someone else is reading it, well... well it means that his new owner should know his real name.  It'll help you bond with him.  Who knows, maybe you'll even notice a change in his demeanour if he's been giving you problems.

His real name is Tank. Because that is what I drive. Again, if you're reading this and you're from the area, maybe my name has been on the news.  I told the shelter that they couldn't make "Reggie" available for adoption until they received word from my company commander.

See, my parents are gone, I have no siblings, no one I could've left Tank with... and it was my only real request of the Army upon my deployment to Iraq, that they make one phone call the the shelter... in the "event"... to tell them that Tank could be put up for adoption.  Luckily, my colonel is a dog guy, too, and he knew where my platoon  was headed.  He said he'd do it personally.  And if you're reading this, then he made good on his word.

Well, this letter is getting to downright depressing, even though, frankly, I'm just writing it for my dog.  I couldn't imagine if I was writing it for a wife and kids and family.  but still,  Tank has been my family for the last six years, almost as long as the Army has been my family.

And now I hope and pray that you make him part of your family and that he will adjust and come to love you the same way he loved me.  That unconditional love from a dog is what I took with me to Iraq as an inspiration to do something selfless, to protect innocent people from those who would do terrible things... and to keep those terrible people from coming over here.  If I had to give up Tank in order to do it, I am glad to have done so.  He was my example of service and of love.  I hope I honoured him by my service to my country and comrades.

All right, that's enough.  I deploy this evening and have to drop this letter off at the shelter.  I don't think I'll say another good-bye to Tank, though.  I cried too much the first time.  Maybe I'll peek in on him and see if he finally got that third tennis ball in his mouth. Good luck with Tank.  Give him a good home, and give him an extra kiss goodnight - every night - from me.

Thank you, Paul  Mallory

____________ _________ _________ _______

I folded the letter and slipped it back in the envelope.  Sure I had heard of Paul Mallory, everyone in town knew him, even new people like me.  Local kid, killed in Iraq a few months ago and posthumously earning the Silver Star when he gave his life to save three buddies.  Flags had been at half-mast all summer.

I leaned forward in my chair and rested my elbows on my knees, staring at the dog.

"Hey, Tank," I said quietly.

The dog's head whipped up, his ears cocked and his eyes bright.

"C'mere boy."

He was instantly on his feet, his nails clicking on the hardwood floor.  He sat in front of me, his head tilted, searching for the name he hadn't heard in months.

"Tank," I whispered.

His tail swished. I kept whispering his name, over and over, and each time, his ears lowered, his eyes softened, and his posture relaxed as a wave of contentment just seemed to flood him.  I stroked his ears, rubbed his shoulders, buried my face into his scruff and hugged him.

"It's me now, Tank, just you and me. Your old pal gave you to me."  Tank reached up and licked my cheek.

"So whatdaya say we play some ball?  His ears perked again.  "Yeah?  Ball?  You like that?  Ball?"  Tank tore from my hands and  disappeared in the next room.

And when he came back, he had three tennis balls in his mouth.

Angels Speak – How To Clean Your Oven

“My oven was dirty.  It is not self cleaning, and that fact is one of the reasons that I really would like to receive a new oven into my life.”

These were the thoughts that rolled through my mind as I sprayed Easy Off Oven Cleaner into my dark, cold oven.  The smell set off my olfactory sensory organs, driving them into overtime work.  My nose began to run.  I really do not like cleaning the oven.

This negative energy that I created stayed with me as I went to bed.  It appeared in my dreams.  And, finally, it woke me up.  And, there was a beautiful, bright light sitting on Roger’s dresser, looking down at me with a loving, mischievous smile. Her smile was actually more of an impression than seeing it in real time.  She was simply too bright.

This loving, guardian angel of mine came to help clean the oven in a way that would shift my thinking about cleaning ovens in the future.  Here is her guidance.

“Dear One, do not lie awake fretting about the oven.  The solution is so simple.  Would you like me to share it with you? (I nodded yes.)  In the morning, when you are ready to clean your oven, simply take the Palmolive detergent that you use, and soak your dishcloth in it.  Then begin wiping the oven.  Palmolive will cut through the grease, and, it will protect your hands so you do not need to wear gloves.  The soap will keep the cloth clean so that you will not need to throw it away due to staining.  You will be finished cleaning the oven in about fifteen to twenty minutes.”

Now, after she disappeared, I have to admit that I was still a bit sceptical about the claim that I would be finished in that short a time.  That would be a first! I closed my eyes, to go back to sleep, all the while thinking about all the things I needed to do to prepare for company. I could not still my mind, so I used the “Touch Your Eyes” meditation that we published in our October 2009 edition of Angels And Ancestors Newsletter. (Get this at www.angelsandancestors.com/archive.html.) I drifted off to sleep.

In the morning, at 6:45am, I was wide awake, and ready to tackle the oven with my new found information.  I dressed quickly, and went down to start my oven cleaning task (read as “ordeal”). I got my cloth, filled it full of Palmolive, and began wiping down the stove. It was great! And, she was right! I was finished in a little over fifteen minutes.

The greasy, gooey gunk wiped off easily.  The cloth rinsed out easily.  There was no ongoing smell.  I did not need to wear gloves, and the stove simply sparkled when I was done.  Further, my hands felt soft from the Palmolive, and were not all wrinkled.  I stopped and said a brief prayer of gratitude to all my guides and angels, and especially to my Guardian Angel.  Who knew that cleaning the stove could be this easy! I am almost looking forward to the next time that I need to do it to see whether the experience will be the same.

Spirit Animal – Dove, The Protector

This story appeared in my email, and then the next day, while talking with my girlfriend in my session (healing) room, a dove’s feather dropped between us.

I started to tingle.  Dove stuff two days in a row!  Dove had something important to say.  First, he was saying – let there be peace.  Second, his message was about one of the Universe’s Laws – keep safe the children.  Noah instinctively knew that the bunnies were helpless, and that they needed to be cared for.  The bigger message for humans is that we all need to care for our children – and stop the predators who use the sweetness of a child to feed their need for power.  We need to provide better education for them. Not education about history, but education on community, on doing the right thing for the community – like Noah does instinctively – and on working on balance, and not greed, power, and competition.

**************************************************************

These little bunnies, about 6 days old, were attacked by a dog and orphaned. Two out of the litter of five did not survive, and these three were not doing very well.

clip_image002Noah is a non-releasable, one-legged homing pigeon/rock dove that is in the rehab center. Noah kept going over to the bunny cage and looking in -- even sleeping in front of the door to the cage.

imageThen, suddenly, there were only two bunnies in the cage.  But when Noah moved a bit from the front of the cage to everyone's surprise...there was the tiny bunny..under Noah's wing....sound asleep! That little bunny rabbit had crawled through the cage, preferring a featherbed, no doubt to snuggling up with its littermates!

image Now, they are all together and the bunnies are doing GREAT. When the bunnies scoot underneath Noah's feathers, he carefully extends his wings out to surround them and then they snuggle..  When one of them moves and they start sticking out here and there, he gently pushes them back under him with his beak!  It is beautiful and amazing to see....
Is this what God does with us when we need the warmth and love He offers. He gathers us under His loving wings to a cradle of protection. All we need do in return is give Him the thanks and praise for being with us.

Spirit Animals – Chickens Sharing

More than 300 cities in North America have amended their bylaws to allow urban chickens. More than 300 cities in North America have amended their bylaws to allow urban chickens. (Terri Trembath/CBC) from the headlines “Trial set for Calgary mom raising chickens”  Last Updated: Tuesday, October 6, 2009 | 4:17 PM MT www.cbc.ca/canada/calgary/story/2009/10/06/calgary-backyard-chickens-hens-court-ticket-march.html

Chicken has moved from the tops of the trees, to the ground, and from wild to domestic, to work in partnership with man.  Man protects Chicken from the predators, and Chicken produces eggs for man, for eating purposes for the family, or for selling, to raise money.  Chicken has always been in agreement with this arrangement.  So, why are people not in favour of having Chicken in the back yard when clearly fresh eggs are healthier than processed ones that may be sitting on a shelf for a week or so?  It seems the answer is that the issue is not about food, but about having a “Chicken” for a neighbour.

If Chicken is moving into your neighbourhood, she brings several messages.

  1. Living close together is about being in community.  If someone is doing something good and healthy, in the way of providing food, the community needs to take note.  Innovators usually show the upcoming trends.  As food becomes more scarce, people will love to have Chickens in their back yards.
  2. Chicken loves to be in flocks – for safety, for discussion, and for sourcing food.  Chicken says that humans need to remember what community is about.  One does not have community where the values of the individual cancel out the “good for the group” actions.  Humans are sitting on the brink of a time where safety and food sourcing are going to be means of survival.  Chicken shows the way.
  3. Chicken may be noisy, however, she is about peace.  She likes to get along.  Perhaps humans can learn a lesson from this trait.

Spirit Animals – Blue Jay’s Thoughts

Blue Jay finds this time of year amusing because humans, in general, do not appreciate the passing of the seasons.  For Blue Jay, foraging becomes easier because the competition is reduced as so many birds fly south.  Although squirrels do compete for the succulent morsels of sunflower seeds, early birds do get the seeds!

Some humans do have compassion for birds at this time of year. (Note that we have had about four inches of snow in the last couple of days, here in south eastern Calgary.)  Blue Jay has a route that carries him and a buddy or two, through the neighbourhood to pick up food.

Blue Jay has this to say:  “I show up in your life when you need to be aware that magic is all around you.  I carry messages for Great Spirit, the Mother of us all.  I am about truth.  I remind you that you need to speak your truth, act with truth, and be your truth.  Working a mundane job to pay the mortgage is not soul satisfying.  Perhaps it is time to quit doing the things that do not feed your spirit.”

Angels And Ancestors – Wide Spread Earthquakes (Change)

image

This picture comes from www.iris.edu/dms/seismon.htm and is from September 11th at UTC time 20:40.

Many of the different prophecies talk about the world “breaking”. Because the ancestors did not have a good word for earthquake, and how the Teutonic plates would shift, all the prophecies refer to “break”.   The world is not breaking.  Instead, it is changing, and at a rapid pace.

These changes are part of the ongoing evolution of Earth.  There is no right or wrong. There is simply action.  Yes, these earthquakes cause damage and may cause waves or situations were people are killed or injured.

An action that we can take, is to sit in meditation and hold space for these earthquakes to happen peacefully and with out harm to anyone.  And, without direct permissions from the people involved, for us to get involved and work directly with individuals, that is as much as we can do to assist the process at this time.

Tarot Discussion – OSHO Card 14 - Integration

image

The card of Integration #14 from OSHO’s Transformational Zen deck

This card keeps coming up for me, and it puzzles me.  Like so many of us, I keep thinking that once I have done the work around something such as integrating my male and female self to come to a perfect balance, that I should never have to deal with it again.  However, like dirty laundry, our emotions, actions, and interactions with others keep showing up.  I, for one, will not let my laundry pile up longer than a week.  So, it seems that “as above, so below”, all the emotional stuff in my etheric and ketheric fields keeps coming to the surface for me to “clean up” and integrate into my soul.

Here is what Osho says on the topic of integration:  The image of integration is the unio mystica, the fusion of opposites. This is a time of communication between the previously experienced dualities of life. Rather than night opposing day, dark suppressing light, they work together to create a unified whole, turning endlessly one into the other, each containing in its deepest core the seed of the opposite.
The eagle and the swan are both beings of flight and majesty. The eagle is the embodiment of power and aloneness. The swan is the embodiment of space and purity, gently floating and diving, upon and within the element of the emotions, entirely content and complete within her perfection and beauty. We are the union of eagle and swan: male and female, fire and water, life and death. The card of integration is the symbol of self-creation, new life, and mystical union; otherwise known as alchemy.

Client Case File – Chaos

Before anything is brought back into order, it is quite normal for it to be brought first into a kind of confusion, a virtual chaos.  In this way, things that fit together badly are severed from each other; and when they have been severed, then God arranges them in order. – Emanuel Swedenborg (one of the early theorists about chaos, and the role that it plays. Wikipedia notes that …. February 8, 1688 to March 29, 1772 - was a Swedish scientist, philosopher,  Christian  mystic, and theologian. Swedenborg had a prolific career as an inventor and scientist)

image

From www-chaos.umd.edu – picture of a damped pendulum displaying chaos theory

The definition of Chaos, from the Merriam-Webster dictionary is: “a state of things in which chance is supreme; especially : the confused unorganized state of primordial matter before the creation of distinct forms —  b : the inherent unpredictability in the behavior of a complex natural system (as the atmosphere, boiling water, or the beating heart) -- 3 a : a state of utter confusion <the blackout caused chaos throughout the city> b : a confused mass or mixture <a chaos of television antennas>”

I give you this quote and the definition to help you understand that chaos is real, has been identified some four hundred years ago, and seems to play a big role in change.  This was demonstrated in a client case.  A lady, mid forties, came to see me with numerous problems.  One main issue for her was that she had sprained her ankle while at a symphony jazz recital.  She had, apparently, mis-stepped when she was going down the steps at intermission.

The two things that were notable was that, one, the ankle was not healing, it seemed, after a month time period went by.  And, two, the problematic ankle seemed to be the beginning of a series of challenges that made life seem difficult and that resulted in her feeling as though the whole world disliked her, and was against her.  Swedenborg, noted that when things get chaotic, a space opens up that allows God, or Great Spirit, to move in and create order.

In this particular case, the women seemed to be moving into a place of greater spirituality.  In the past, she had tried a few things, and then quit doing them because nothing seemed to grab her and make her excited.  It seems that her Angels and Guides were trying to reach her, and to get her to do more (actually any) meditation and prayer on a continuous basis so they would have permission to help her change those things that she was wanting to work on.  However, she wasn’t meditating and in her prayers, she was asking for stuff for others.

When we are not moving on the path that is in our blueprint, then life seems tough, and full of challenges.  When that happens, generally an accident or illness happens to put us into a place where we are forced to make changes.

In this case, this lady finally felt so badly – discontent, unhappy, upset, and was unable to sleep through the night – that she decided to look for a healer that would be able to help her shift some of the “pain”.

While I was working on her, we actually had to shift a past life that happened about one thousand years ago. In this lifetime, she was very much in love with a young man.  She was killed in a robbery before the young couple could do anything about their relationship.  She came back quickly, and reconnected with him, although there was a seventeen year age difference.  Although she met him, and was able to be in his life for a while, they could not fulfill any relationship because he was hauled away by the Church soldiers for beliefs contrary to the Church’s stand.  And, she never saw him again.

She carried this ache for this unfulfilled relationship through many lifetimes, until in this lifetime, it created chaos for her.  The wishing for something that was not meant to be did interfere with her attaining things that were possible.

This block is now cleared through the Akashic records, and she will be able to go on with some clarity.  Other issues will arise, certainly! However, she will not grieve over that lost time in her life.

Angels Speak – Jupiter’s Moons

  image

Image of Jupiter’s moons from www.deepfly.org

During September, we happened to be at our friends, several hours north of Calgary, lying on the trampoline at midnight, watching the stars.  It was a gloriously clear night.  The air was crisp, and the clouds that had been floating around the area at dusk had been chased away by a light breeze.  It was  a perfect night!  In the south, we could see this very bright shining star, which turned out to be the planet, Jupiter.

As the night became very still, we could see one large object off to the side of the planet.  We pulled out the binoculars, and we could actually see two of the moons.  I felt quite in awe of the moment, a moment where we could actually look into the area of another planet, with binoculars!  Who would have believed that even ten years ago?  It seems that as we have become more outward looking – towards the Universe – stars and planets are much easier to see.  In fact, new stars are being found with growing frequency.

The Angels have talked about how the whole Universe is connected. That night, even though Jupiter is 390 million miles away, it seemed so close.

image

A picture of Jupiter taken by Mike Salway, 2006

It is so feasible, that if there is life on another planet, like Jupiter, that they can see us, if we can see them.  It also seems possible, that the light that Jupiter sends out to us is as vital to our growth and development as the light from the Sun.  What makes Jupiter special is that we can gaze at it without damaging our eyes.  And, if you stare at it, you may feel a slight shiver in your body as your body attempts to deal with the energy from so far away.

Tarot Discussion – OSHO Card 11 - Breakthrough

image

The Breakthrough card from OSHO Zen Tarot Deck.

This card represents what has been happening to me this year – I have been breaking free of my old, constraining ways of thinking, and of acting.  Does this fit for you?

Osho says, “ To transform breakdowns into breakthroughs is the whole function of a master. The psychotherapist simply patches you up. That is his function. He is not there to transform you. You need a meta-psychology, the psychology of the buddhas.
It is the greatest adventure in life to go through a breakdown consciously. It is the greatest risk because there is no guarantee that the breakdown will become a breakthrough. It does become, but these things cannot be guaranteed. Your chaos is very ancient - for many, many lives you have been in chaos. It is thick and dense. It is almost a universe in itself. So when you enter into it with your small capacity, of course there is danger. But without facing this danger nobody has ever become integrated, nobody has ever become an individual, indivisible.
Zen, or meditation, is the method which will help you to go through the chaos, through the dark night of the soul, balanced, disciplined, alert. The dawn is not far away, but before you can reach the dawn, the dark night has to be passed through. And as the dawn comes closer, the night will become darker.”

Ancestors Speak – October 1 2009

I love the fall, and the feeling of peacefulness that it brings, as Mother Nature blankets up her charges and puts them to sleep.  I love walking through the dried grass with the dogs, and feeling the crispness of the grass and the air against my skin.2009 10 autumn leaves

Just as Mother Nature cleans up the plants and the trees, and even the water and earth, we, too, need to clean up before the long winter rest.  We need to let go of old hurts, angers, resentments, and victimizations that we have hugged to our souls.  These wounds, for they are wounds, cripple us because we cannot move forward with our lives in ease.  The wounds may also cause us to become ill. The word “ill” by the way, is a word that means “attributing evil or an objectionable quality”, or, “causing suffering or distress”, or “not normal or sound <ill health>”.  One can see from Merriam-Webster’s definition that our hurts fit our ills.

I found a lovely prayer to offer up to the Goddess, who, one must remember is an aspect of Great Spirit.  It comes from Zsuzsanna Budapest, from her book, “The Grandmother of Time”.  She suggests writing out all the names of those people that you have issues with, and that you burn this list, as you say this prayer.

Dearest Goddess,

I have come a long way this year, carrying my burdens.  I would like to take them off my shoulders and give them back to you to recycle, to bury, to compost.  Here, I offer you my resentments against friends, family, and (fill in you own needs here), and ask you to absorb them into your black universe.  Relieve me of them and allow me to walk more lightly.

Now – Burn this list either in candle flames or in your smudging bowl.

I feel all light, happy and cleansed now.  Dearest Goddess, you are my true strength and guide.  I thank you for being accessible and answering your children’s call.  I honour you and thank you.

Now – take the ashes and throw them into living water to let them wash away.  As you cast them off, don’t think about this anymore.

This is an amazing process!  If you are not comfortable using the term “Goddess” even though she is an aspect of Creator, then use the term “God”, or what ever you are comfortable with.  Each term is simply the aspect of Creator that resonates for us!

May all your prayers be heartfelt!
