The other morning, the dogs and I were walking along the river, when we heard a lot of noise in the sky. A Belted Kingfisher was chasing and attacking a crow, by picking at its head.

The crow was flying for the nearest shelter and cawing away for help, and telling the Kingfisher to take a hike.

Following along the two fighters, was a Magpie, who obviously was cheering for the Kingfisher.

Crow, of course, is known for its habit of stealing eggs from nests, and even sometimes taking baby birds. For many birds, Crow is a predator to be feared and fought.
It seems that Kingfisher had a real anger on for Crow, and chased him across the meadow and into the woods. The size difference between Kingfisher and Crow is that Kingfisher looks about one-third of Crow’s size. Magpie was cheering for the underdog. And, Magpie never interfered.
The short story of this scene seems to be that if you wrong someone, it is likely that they will never forget. And, if others know that you have wronged birds/people, they will not rush in to help you. Rather, they will cheer the protagonist, and hope that the wrong-doer suffers. Such is the way with the birds, and so it is with people.
