I have recently watched Series One and Two of the TV show “Life”. One of the things that I love about the show is the main character’s (Charlie Cruise) love of and student interest in, the school of Zen. Throughout the series, Cruise toys with the idea of “Oneness” and what it means. He has some interesting ideas around the concept.

Coincidently, (and Charlie Cruise will tell you that there are no such things as coincidences), I came across this Koan by the Zen teacher, Ummon. When asked what was the teaching of Buddha’s lifetime, Ummon responded, “Preaching facing oneness.”
While Zen master teachers are to deliver their lectures while facing the Buddha, this koan is really about “truth”. Oneness equals truth – about yourself, all people, the media, the world, the animals. Everything needs to be seen in the light of absolute truth.
Try this – it is difficult because we refer to our story when looking for the truth. And, as we all know, our story tends to be biased.
