Ancestors Speak – The First of March

In the days of our Ancestors, even fifty years ago, March was an exciting month.  It was a month of the feminine and creation.  Many new lambs, calves and colts were born in this month.  Oh yes! And baby boys and girls too.

March is sacred to the Goddesses – Aphrodite, Oestre, Rhiannon, Juno, and Lucina.  March is the month for women. The celebration is for weddings and for motherhood.  In the past, fires and festivals heralded the first day of March. It was an honouring of the Goddesses, and saying good-bye to winter.  There might still be snow in places, yet in the warmest spots, new green grass is poking out and telling the world that soon the ground will be covered with the lushness of fresh grass.

Young women will begin offering prayers to the Goddesses for the “right” young man to come along and offer marriage.  “Right” may include prosperity, land, cattle, handsome, hard working, and happiness with long life together.  The Goddess shrine may be represented by a statue of a women holding flowers and a baby.  Young men begin courting, and taking gifts to offer to the lady of their choice.

Times have changed!  Nature still moves at the same rate, and in balance. Spring still starts on March 20 or March 21. Our faiths (religions) have changed.  Life is more free and the same courting is not followed.  Love seems more surreal and short term.  Still, it seems to be a time of the feminine.  New fashions come out. Creativity seems heightened.  People, in general, become more relaxed after the winter.  It does seem that Great Spirit smiles on us.
