Spirit Animal - Red Fox

"Red Fox" - picture from Microsoft Clip Art

Several Saturdays ago, I was talking on the phone and staring out our living room window into the cul-de-sac where I live.  I was totally surprised when a very large red fox ran into the cove, circled it, and raced out.  I stopped talking!  My friend thought the cordless phone had died and started shouting - "Hello, hello! Are you there?"

In truth, I wasn't for several minutes.  I was far away wondering why a fox had showed up in my life.  Fox's colour is black feet with red back and sides and head, and some white on the belly, throat and muzzle.  Fox does blend in to it's surroundings, and yet running through the cove, it did not blend at all.  It stuck out!

What we know about fox is that we humans think that it is sly or cunning.  We hear phrases like "smart like the fox" or "a thief like a fox" or "crazy like a fox".  All these expressions are an aspect of Fox's character that humans recognize but do not necessarily understand.  We also recognize the beauty of the fox, for we refer to beautiful women as "Foxy Ladies".

Fox has a reputation throughout the world.  In Chinese mythology, Fox is said to be a demon or spirit in disguise because Fox has shape-shifting power.  In Bolivia, the legends pay tribute to Fox for bringing heavenly fruit seeds to Earth, from a feast Fox attended in Heaven.  The Oneida Nation tells the story that Fox was responsible for Bear loosing his great, bushy tail, and that Fox's trick on Bear is the reason bears and foxes do not get along.

All of these characteristics and stories reflect the messages that Fox wants us to know.  Some may apply for your current situation, and others may not.  Fox comes to teach us and remind us that:

--one must use their ability to be invisible, by camouflaging themselves, to blend in when one is not sure of the group.

--one must use great cleverness in moving out of situations where one is not sure who the predators (bad guys) are.

--Fox likes the dusk and the dawn the best because it is easier to blend in, and this time is also the time that we associate with magic and fairies, and therefore Fox reminds you to look to the dawn for guidance from the Spirit realm.

Follow the guidance of Fox, and move through this world with grace!
