I took the dogs to the park yesterday, and up on the hill, about one half mile from water, was a mother Mallard Duck and her babies. Magic, always focused on the ball, totally ignored the family. Sage, however, wanted desperately to run in and play with all the babies. Mama Mallard was keeping an eye on him!
Mama Mallard’s message was about trust. The www.thefreedictionary.com offers these five definitions of “trust”. Note that they have three other definitions around the law, which are not included here. Trust is defined as:
- Firm reliance on the integrity, ability, or character of a person or thing.
- Custody; care.
- Something committed into the care of another; charge.
- The condition and resulting obligation of having confidence placed in one: violated a public trust. b. One in which confidence is placed.
- Reliance on something in the future; hope.
Along her journey, Mama Mallard was showing the way to humans – the way to trust. She had her nest several blocks away from the park, under a pine tree in the front yard of a home. She hatched her young, and crossed two streets of busy traffic, trusting that people along the way, would help her keep her young safe, and allow her to get them to water.
In turn, her babies trusted Mama absolutely, even though the sound of cars, buses and dogs (they were traveling through an off leash park) must have scared them silly.
Mama Mallard trusted me to control Sage, and I leashed him, because I could tell by her body language and her random images that she needed me to do that.
Hope is something that we normally attribute to humans. However, Mama Mallard seemed fully hopeful that all the babies would make it to the pond in Fish Creek Park, and that the journey would be without incident. She also seemed to have pictures in her mind of the ducklings growing quickly, and getting ready to fly.
Mama Mallard and her determination moved me, first because I was in awe of her, and second, because her actions uplifted me! I could see life and loving, and peacefulness, and constancy of purpose in her actions. I could see her as a healing force for all that crossed her path. Perhaps she will be a Shaman in her next life.
