My office window overlooks a parking lot, and beyond the parking lot is a large hill that goes up to a plateau where there are a set of buildings, filled with interesting businesses. The hill is home to a tribe of gophers. Each day, they provide me with moments of entertainment when they show how clever they are.
Several days ago, a magpie landed on the green with a large chunk of bread. It was probably someone’s sandwich that he’d lifted. The gophers decided that they would like the bread. They rushed the magpie and teased it until the magpie was incensed enough to drop the bread and chase the worst offender. Very quickly, two gophers jumped on the bread, split it, and carried it back to the burrows. Magpie chased the decoy gopher, who kept checking to see if his team took the bread. When they were clear, decoy gopher headed down the closest burrow. Magpie was not happy!
The lesson Gopher so readily showed to us is that we are more when we work as a team. By himself, decoy gopher could not lead Magpie away and get the bread. The gophers showed the value of planning, executing, and enjoying. They found a way to take advantage of any opportunity that comes their way.
We humans can learn a lot about working together from the gopher clan.

Judy
