Spirit Animals – Chickens Sharing

More than 300 cities in North America have amended their bylaws to allow urban chickens. More than 300 cities in North America have amended their bylaws to allow urban chickens. (Terri Trembath/CBC) from the headlines “Trial set for Calgary mom raising chickens”  Last Updated: Tuesday, October 6, 2009 | 4:17 PM MT www.cbc.ca/canada/calgary/story/2009/10/06/calgary-backyard-chickens-hens-court-ticket-march.html

Chicken has moved from the tops of the trees, to the ground, and from wild to domestic, to work in partnership with man.  Man protects Chicken from the predators, and Chicken produces eggs for man, for eating purposes for the family, or for selling, to raise money.  Chicken has always been in agreement with this arrangement.  So, why are people not in favour of having Chicken in the back yard when clearly fresh eggs are healthier than processed ones that may be sitting on a shelf for a week or so?  It seems the answer is that the issue is not about food, but about having a “Chicken” for a neighbour.

If Chicken is moving into your neighbourhood, she brings several messages.

  1. Living close together is about being in community.  If someone is doing something good and healthy, in the way of providing food, the community needs to take note.  Innovators usually show the upcoming trends.  As food becomes more scarce, people will love to have Chickens in their back yards.
  2. Chicken loves to be in flocks – for safety, for discussion, and for sourcing food.  Chicken says that humans need to remember what community is about.  One does not have community where the values of the individual cancel out the “good for the group” actions.  Humans are sitting on the brink of a time where safety and food sourcing are going to be means of survival.  Chicken shows the way.
  3. Chicken may be noisy, however, she is about peace.  She likes to get along.  Perhaps humans can learn a lesson from this trait.
