Ancestors Speak – Protecting Dogs From Fleas

A common issue during the summer is to keep our dog buddies free from fleas and wood ticks.  Here are some great ideas for washing Rover to keep her safe from these pests (and to keep your house free of the varmints as well).

Idea One – wash your dog in a bath with peppermint castile soap.  Peppermint is a repellent for the fleas, ticks, and even for some deer flies and mosquitoes.

Idea Two – make a cloth collar for your dog and then soak it with some essential oils.  Use one drop each of

  • cedarwood
  • lavender
  • citronella
  • thyme

The oils will remain strong on the collar – provided your dog stays out of the water – for about one month.  Simply add a drop of the oils every four weeks to keep the collar fresh and useable.

Idea Three – mix the oils together that one uses for the flea repellent collar talked about in Idea Two above, and sprinkle it on a brush. Thoroughly brush the dog.  Not only will it repel the fleas and ticks, it will add a beautiful shine to your dog’s coat.

Let us know if this works for you!
